چکیده

[1] Alluvial fan deltas are built by aggrading and avulsing river channels. A numerical model of flow and sediment transport in channels is combined with a condition for channel avulsion to describe evolution of the fan surface. The model combines elements of two recent approaches: (1) diffusional models of depositional basin filling, which describe the evolution of overall morphology, and (2) cellular models of channel evolution, which provide simplified descriptions of channel dynamics. Here the cellular formulation is used simply as a template for discretizing a standard set of equations describing flow and sediment transport within channels. The basic formulation is thus grid-invariant, and the results are in actual rather than arbitrary time and length scales. The model captures the interaction between microscale (channel) morphodynamics, including converging and diverging flow and avulsion, and morphodynamics at the macroscale (fan). It provides a starting point for the study of a wide range of topics, including the three-dimensional stratigraphy of fan delta deposits and the response of fan deltas to engineering activities.

cHAPTER 6 Deltas

Deltas are discrete shoreline protuberances formed where rivers enter oceans, semi-enclosed seas, lakes or lagoons and supply sediment more rapidly than it can be redistributed by basinal processes. Generally, deltas are served by well-defined drainage systems which culminate in a trunk stream and supply sediment to a restricted area of the shoreline, thus resulting in the formation of a depoce...

Investigating the interaction between rivers and sand dunes in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Fluvial and aeolian processes are important factors in changing the surface of morphology in the Earth. When rivers and sand dunes meet, the transportation of sediment  between them can lead to one of the systems or both  of them change. With their connection between river sediment and wind systems there would be lots of reactions, but very little has been st...

Fluvial sedimentary deposits on Mars: Ancient deltas in a crater lake in the Nili Fossae region

[1] New spacecraft observations in the Nili Fossae region of Mars reveal two valley networks (!80 and !200 km long) that each formed distributary fans as they entered an ancient 40-km diameter impact crater. An outlet channel on the eastern crater rim, lying at an elevation above the fans, suggests these fans formed as subaqueous deltas in a crater lake. Water flowing in the valley networks ent...

Field migration rates of tidal meanders recapitulate fluvial morphodynamics

The majority of tidal channels display marked meandering features. Despite their importance in oil-reservoir formation and tidal landscape morphology, questions remain on whether tidal-meander dynamics could be understood in terms of fluvial processes and theory. Key differences suggest otherwise, like the periodic reversal of landscape-forming tidal flows and the widely accepted empirical noti...

Geomorphic Channel Patterns of Deltas versus Distal Submarine Fans: Implications for Sedimentation Processes on Earth and Mars

Channel systems at the distal limits of submarine fans show variability in channel size and bifurcation patterns. This information is useful in constraining channel properties in static reservoir models, e.g. the mean and range of values typical for channel dimensions, sinuosity, and branching angles. Criteria were evaluated that might help discriminate between deltas and submarine fans based o...
